Basato sul
romanzo picaresco di Bomuhil Hrabal, il film narra la parodistica
ascesa – e successiva caduta – di un apprendista cameriere nella
Cecoslovacchia della prima metŕ del secolo scorso. Jan Dite vuole
diventare milionario, e sa come farlo: ascoltando e osservando ogni
cosa, per poi usarla al momento giusto. Decide cosě di lasciare la
piccola cittadina situata vicino al confine ceco-tedesco e il pub
dove lavora per un posto in un lussuoso albergo vicino a Praga, dove
incontra il meglio dell’alta societŕ cecoslovacca degli anni ’30. Lo
stravagante stile di vita che la contraddistingue non fa che
alimentare l’ambizione del giovane, che trova presto un altro
lavoro, in un nuovo e lussuoso albergo nel centro della capitale.
Con il Trattato di Monaco, la fortuna di Jan comincia a cambiare.
Innamorato di una giovane attivista tedesca di nome Lisa, quando i
tedeschi occupano la Cecoslovacchia la sua carriera decolla: dopo
aver dimostrato la propria discendenza ariana, Jan sposa Lisa e
comincia a lavorare per i tedeschi. In breve, si ritrova in uno
degli istituti del progetto Lebensborn, gestito dalle SS, uno di
quei luoghi dove Heinrich Himmler intende allevare la razza
superiore ariana. Di lě a poco, sembra che il sogno di Jan di
possedere un albergo tutto suo sia finalmente a portata di mano…
“Il ‘sense of humour’ di Hrabal e il suo modo cosě colorito di
narrare una serie di episodi della vita di un ambizioso apprendista
cameriere mi ha offerto molti momenti in cui girare č stato
veramente piacevole. Tuttavia, non sarebbe stato Hrabal se dietro
una narrazione esteriormente cosě vivace non ci fosse anche un
giudizio, un’opinione sull’indole ceca e su tutti i capovolgimenti
della storia del paese. Tale opinione, tale giudizio č anche l’idea

Based on a picaresque novel by Bohumil Hrabal, the film tells the
story of the burlesque rise and fall of an apprentice waiter in
Czechoslovakia during the first half of the last century. Jan Dite
wants to become a millionaire and he knows just how to do it: by
hearing everything, seeing everything, and using what he heard and
saw. One day, he decides to leave his small town near the
Czech-German border and the pub where he works. Shortly afterwards
he obtains a position at a luxurious hotel near Prague where he
encounters the ‘crčme de la crčme’ of 1930s Czech society. Their
extravagant lifestyle only serves to fuel his ambition; he soon
starts working at an elegant new hotel at the centre of Prague. With
the Treaty of Munich Jan’s luck begins to change. In love with a
young German activist named Lisa, when the Germans occupy
Czechoslovakia Jan’s career really takes off: after proving his
Aryan descent, he marries Lisa and starts working for the Germans.
Within a short space of time he finds himself in one of the
Lebensborn homes run by the SS, where Heinrich Himmler is hoping to
breed the Aryan master race. Before long it looks as though Jans
dream of owning his own hotel is well within his grasp…
“Hrabal’s sense of humour and his colorful way of narrating a
variety of episodes from the life of an ambitious trainee offered
many moments that were a pleasure to shoot. However, it would not be
from Hrabal’s pen if he did not pronounce a verdict on the Czech
character and on all the somersaults of local history hidden behind
the seemingly mischievous storytelling. This verdict is also the key
